As Shabbat ended on Saturday night tragedy struck the capital city of Jerusalem, with the untimely death of an 11-year-old boy who fell down the staircase shaft in his school in the northern neighborhood of Ramot.
The boy had been playing with his friends on the roof of the school when he suddenly fell through an opening in the roof that led to the stairway shaft, and was critically wounded by the lengthy fall.
Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics and United Hatzalah volunteers were called to the school and provided first aid before evacuating the boy to Shaare Tzedek Hospital in the city.
Shortly after he arrived at the hospital doctors were forced to pronounce the child's death.
Isaac Katz, a United Hatzalah volunteer who was at the scene of the incident, related: "when I arrived on the scene the child was unconscious, had no pulse and wasn't breathing after having entered the school facility with his friends and falling from a great height while playing on the roof of the school."
"We conducted resuscitation maneuvers in an attempt to save his life," recalled Katz.
"The gate of the school was locked and the firefighting crew was forced to break in. The children evidently climbed the gate and entered to play in the school facility."
