Abbas blasts Israeli ‘occupation’ at UN climate summit

The UN Climate Summit in New York on Friday turned into a diplomatic battleground between the Israeli and the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) representatives.

The incident began when PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who attended the summit and signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, took advantage of the opportunity to verbally attack Israel.

“The occupation is ruining Palestine, and the settlements are ruining the environment," he charged, before adding, "Please help us stop the occupation and the settlements."

"It has become vital to change the international approach to dealing with the Palestinian cause,” Abbas said, according to comments quoted by the Ma’an news agency.

“That is why we support the French initiative, which calls for forming international support groups, holding an international peace convention, and establishing a multi-faceted method to end Israeli occupation of Palestinian land,” he added.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, responded to Abbas’s accusations in a speech of his own.

“Instead of spreading hatred here at the UN, President Abbas should act to stop Palestinian terror,” Danon said.

“This climate summit is supposed to be a demonstration of global unity for the sake of the future of our planet. Unfortunately, President Abbas chose to exploit this international stage to mislead the international community,” added the Israeli envoy.

The incident marks the second time this week that the Israeli and the PA representatives clashed at the UN.

The previous incident occurred on Monday, when Danon hosted the husband and daughter of Dafna Meir, who was murdered by a terrorist at the entrance to her home in Otniel in January.

At the start of his speech, Danon criticized the incitement and the glorification of terror in the Palestinian Authority which he said “is directly responsible for the murder of innocent Israelis.”

He then turned to the PA representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, and asked him, "Are you prepared to condemn at this moment the terror against innocent Israelis?"

After Mansour refused, Danon said, "Shame on you! Instead of condemning terror you glorify it." Mansour shouted back, "Shame on you for killing Palestinian children!" and later also said, “Let my people be free! Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you! You are an occupier.”
