Cheney: Obama Created Vacuum that Led to Refugees

Former US Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney, and his daughter Liz Cheney, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, blamed President Barack Obama Sunday for the current refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe.

"All across Europe today, the tragedy there, is a direct consequence of Barack Obama's Middle East policies,” said Liz Cheney. “A direct consequence of walking away from the Middle East, and creating chaos, creating a vacuum that ISIS, that Iran, that America's enemies are now filling.”

"I think what's happened is he's created a huge vacuum. He's made it very clear he's not going to use military force to any effective extent. The vacuum that was created once the caliphate was formed and so forth and the enormous violence that gone forward in Syria has contributed directly to the refugee crisis. I think when the US played a major role in the region when we were there on a significant basis, it would have been much easier to manage this kind of situation.

"Today what you have is a crisis of major proportions in Syria, supported primarily by the Iranians, that's driven hundreds of thousands of people to look for refuge someplace else. They're all headed for Europe and it's a terrible tragedy.”

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace pressed Cheney on whether the Bush-Cheney administration was not reponsible itself for Iran's nuclear proliferation, noting that Iran acquired its first 5,000 centrifuges in 2007-9. Cheney did not answer this directly but said that the US war in Iraq caused Iran to halt its nuclear program for a while, out of fear that it, too, would be attacked.
