IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz approved on Monday citations for bravery and excellence to 25 officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers for their actions during Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in Gaza last summer.
Those receiving awards include Lt. Eitan Pund, deputy commander of a reconnaissance company in the Givati Brigade. On august 1, the 24-year-old led four soldiers into a terrorist tunnel in south Gaza, following the kidnapping of Lt. Hadar Goldin by a Hamas cell. Armed only with a handgun, Pund sought to rescue Goldin. Although he could not locate him, he was able to retrieve evidence from the tunnel that allowed the army to declare Goldin dead. Pund received the Mofet (Good Example) citation, which is the highest award.
