Chief Rabbinate considering radical shake-up of kashrut supervision

The chief rabbinate is weighing the possibility of changing its role in the realm of kashrut licensing by outsourcing kashrut supervision to independent kashrut authorities and turning itself into the industry regulator, it emerged on Sunday.

Such a step would represent a radical shake-up of kashrut supervision in the country, and comes against a background of increasing public dissatisfaction with the rabbinate’s kashrut services.

Sources indicated to The Jerusalem Post however that it is far from certain that the chief rabbinate will adopt such a program, while the chief rabbinate itself said that it was considering this proposal among several others and that it was very possible an alternative plan will be adopted.
