Constant Terror Yields Raise for Jerusalem Police

The Cabinet raised the monthly salary for Israel Police officers in Jerusalem on Friday, after Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) requested a raise for the force in light of the spike in terror in the capital.

Jerusalem District Police officers will now receive an extra 800 shekels (just over $200) per month as a reward for battling an onslaught of Arab terrorists launching rock and firebomb attacks.

Erdan initiated the program after noticing that motivation among the Jerusalem police has waned due to the constant attacks. The decision was made hours after it was cleared for publication that a youth died in a stabbing in the capital overnight, under unclear circumstances.

The move is one of many designed to crack down on terror nationwide, but particularly in and around the capital where a terror wave has been taking place since the Rosh Hashanah hospital last week on Sunday.

On Thursday, the Cabinet expanded the Israel Police's power to stop terrorists, allowing them to open fire when anyone's life is in danger; a minimum 4-year sentence was also mandated for adults caught throwing firebombs.

In addition, minimum fines may be established for parents of minors aged 12-14 engaged in terrorism, and a security deposit payment for parents of children under 12.

Numerous ministers have made other suggestions to improve Israel's deterrence, including deporting perpetrators and their families from Jerusalem.
