Cooperative Shabbat transportation in Jerusalem to help fans get to soccer games

The Shabus cooperative transport service which is operational on Shabbat has teamed up with local Jerusalem soccer team Hapoel Katamon to help fans get to and from the stadium on Friday night.

Shabus, which began operations in May this year, is a cooperative venture authorized by the Ministry of the Economy and provides transportation for non-religious Jerusalemites wishing to travel around the city on Friday night.

Public transportation on Shabbat is not made available in most cities as part of the “status quo” agreement reached in 1947 between David Ben-Gurion and the ultra-Orthodox Agudat Yisrael movement, which addressed the community’s concerns about the status of religion in the putative state.
