Deputy Foreign Minister gives birth to daughter

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) gave birth to a baby daughter Sunday, at the Assaf HaRofeh Hospital in Tzrifin.

Hotovely has named her daughter Eliraz, a representative said, and both mother and baby are in good condition.

The minister, 38, is married to Or Elon. They have one other daughter together, Maayan; Hotovely gave birth to her during the previous government's term.

Hotovely is not the first minister to give birth, and utilize government-mandated maternity leave, during a post in a ministerial position. Minister Gila Gamliel took maternity leave during the 18th Knesset, while she served as Deputy Prime Minister.

Israel's mandatory maternity leave includes 14 weeks of paid leave and 12 of optional unpaid leave, funded by National Insurance (Bituach Leumi). New mothers are also protected under the maternity leave umbrella in a variety of labor laws, including protection against worsening of working conditions and lowering of wages.
