Despite Winning, FIFA President Resigns Amid Corruption Scandal

FIFA President Sepp Blatter announced on Tuesday that after winning a fifth term last Friday, he is nevertheless choosing to resign, as his organization is embroiled in corruption scandals.

"I have deeply reflected on my presidency and my past 40 years at FIFA," Blatter said in a press conference. "I love FIFA more than anything and I only want to do the best for football and FIFA."

As noted he was re-elected at the FIFA Congress in Zurich, Switzerland last Friday, securing a fifth term at the helm of the international soccer organization and beating out Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan.

Just days before the elections the US Department of Justice accused nine FIFA officials and five corporate executives as part of a massive bust of a corruption conspiracy.

Among the FIFA officials were two current vice presidents as well as the current and former presidents of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association), Jeffrey Webb and Jack Warner.

It was speculated that Blatter might also be among those targeted in the corruption bust.

Also last Friday the FIFA Congress was set to vote on the Palestinian Authority's (PA) demand to ban Israel from international play on charges of "racism."

At the last minute the PA dropped its demand, as it was predicted that the vote on the motion would fail badly.
