Discrimination in ultra-Orthodox schools leaves over 100 pupils in limbo

Education Ministry should "seriously consider" regional school assignments for ultra-Orthodox schools to prevent discrimination, recommended head of the Knesset Education Committee, MK Ya’acov Margi (Shas) at a committee meeting on Tuesday.

"We are repeatedly being embarrassed on behalf of the principals of institutions that choose to do as they please," said Margi of those principals who discriminate, primarily against Sefardi girls. "I suggest to them that they think about those girls and the parents who cannot look into the eyes of their daughters, who were rejected by the seminars."

Israel Porush, mayor of El’ad, spoke briefly at the meeting but the legal adviser to the committee said that the meeting must not discuss the specific case of El’ad, due to a pending lawsuit on the matter that is being dealt with by the courts.
