Discriminatory acceptance policy of haredi girls school withdrawn following court agreement

An agreement to overturn what was seen as discriminatory practices in the acceptance of haredi girls to high schools in the ultra-Orthodox city of Elad was reached on Wednesday, after over 100 pupils were left without a school to attend ahead of the new academic year.

In July, the parents of more than 100 girls discovered that their daughters had not been accepted to either of the two haredi high schools for girls in the city, Ladaat Chochma and Zleznik, apparently based on a discriminatory policy of accepting only girl’s whose fathers do not work full time.

Ahead of the 2014/2015 academic year, The Zleznik Seminar school in Elad conducted an application process for pupils for that year, in which 118 girls applied, 93 Sephardi and 25 Ashkenazi.
