Gallant warns of housing crisis, says 1 million units needed by 2035

Housing Minister Yoav Gallant (Kulanu) on Monday said that Israel’s housing crisis was on the brink of escalating, and the country would need to build a million new units within 20 years.

"We are on the verge of a housing crisis," Gallant told the Knesset Finance Committee, spitting out an alarming list of statistics to support his claim.

Housing prices have doubled in the past eight years, he said, the result of a 100,000 unit shortage. The fact that half of Israel’s population is concentrated in the central stretch of land between Ashdod and Hadera further complicated matters.
