IDF Warrior Wounded in Jenin Regains Consciousness

The Border Police Yamam counterterrorist unit warrior who was wounded Monday night during an arrest operation in Jenin has regained consciousness at Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

He had suffered a bullet wound in the lower part of his body and underwent an operation. He is now recovering, in stable condition, and will remain hospitalized for the next few days.

The arrest operation included IDF, Yamam and Israel Security Agency (ISA, or Shin Bet) forces. It lasted all night.

The IDF said that in the course of the raid, its forcesd had demolished the home of the target of the arrest military operation. In the course of the raid, hundreds of Arabs hurled firebombs and rocks at the security forces.

Arab media said that the forces encircled several homes and fired rockets at two of them. Five Arabs were wounded and taken to hospital, the reports added.

The home that was torn down belonged to Bassam a-Saadi, head of Islamic Jihad in Judea and Samaria, the Arab reports said. The people the IDF had come to arrest were Majdi Abu al-Hija and his brother Alaa. Both were reportedly arrested.

It was initially reported that the troops came under fire from the terrorists they were trying to apprehend, but upon further investigation it was discovered that the soldier was wounded by "friendly fire". He was airlifted to the Rambam Hospital.

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon confirmed Tuesday that the Yamam warrior was apparently wounded by “friendly fire.”

Addressing the Calcalist conference, Yaalon updated the audience about the Jenin operation. “This was an operation that we initiated inside Jenin in an attempt to arrest one of the terror activists.

"Last week,” he added, “we arrested an Islamic Jihad infrastructure, a Hamas infrastructure – if it was up to these organizations, there would be daily suicide bombings inside Israel.”
