"Every soldier understands that his mission is to protect his people and fight for them. The army's power comes from the people. The soldier is the messenger of the people and that’s where his power comes from,” said Simcha Goldin at an event in his son’s memory at the AMIT school in Ra’anana, where Hadar studied.
"We are committed to the deep pact between the nation and its leaders, that all of Israel's messengers must return and the emissaries of the people must bring him back – this is the profound meaning of the people's army," he continued.
"We will not be deterred by the enemy. We are committed to bringing him and Oron Shaul to burial in Israel and the enemy must learn that it will pay a high price for harming our values. This is the deeper meaning of the concept of the people's army and anyone who believes in this concept must act in light of this," added Simcha Goldin.
Goldin, a first lieutenant in the Givati Brigade, was killed on August 1, 2014 at the height of the operation after Hamas terrorists breached one of several ceasefires to attack his unit on the outskirts of the city of Rafah.
Likewise, Shaul was killed the previous month during clashes between Hamas infiltrators and the IDF in the Gaza Belt and his body was also captured by terrorists.
Hamas has continued to hold the two soldiers’ bodies as bargaining chips. It was rumored that Israel and Hamas would strike a deal for their return which could see the release of terrorists imprisoned in Israel, but Hamas later toughened its conditions for such a deal.
