Israeli Media Watchdog: Coalition deal on public broadcasting is illegal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to close the new Israel Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) and replace it with the current Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) may have hit a setback Tuesday when a watchdog group said the coalition agreement’s clause that won him support for the move from two other parties was illegal.

In order to pass the plan, Netanyahu only needs the support of half the MKs in his 66 MK coalition. That would obligate the entire coalition to support the plan, which would enable it to obtain a majority in the Knesset.
