Jerusalem municipality reportedly funding Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College

The Jerusalem municipality has reportedly approved funding for the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College, a pluralistic institution in the capital that educates rabbis, cantors, and leaders in Jewish education, Army Radio reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, City Councilman Hanan Rubin (Jerusalem Awakening), who serves as the chairman of the Young Adults Family and Students Committee, said the allocation represents the first instance that the municipality has allocated funding to a non-Orthodox institution.

Rubin, who is Orthodox and has helped lead Jerusalem Awakening’s mission of increasing pluralism in the capital, said he held intensive talks with haredi leaders in the council before reaching the agreement.
