Kerry urges Abbas not to resign

US Secretary of State John Kerry called Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, urging him not to resign. According to reports in Arab media, Kerry asked Abbas not to make any critical decisions during the Palestinian National Council gathering in a week and a half. “Kerry urged Abbas not to submit his resignation and not to make any significant decisions against Israel due to the deteriorating situation in the region,” Palestinian sources were quoted as saying. Kerry, they said, explained to Abbas that the region cannot handle a political vacuum at this present time, and that extremists could take advantage of such a vacuum.
