Liberman and Bennett rally to Riskin’s support, call on chief rabbinate to back down

A slew of senior political figures spoke out in support of Rabbi Shlomo Riskin on Thursday, including Yisrael Beytenu leader and former foreign minister Avigdor Liberman, along with Bayit Yehudi chairman Naftali Bennett and Eli Ben-Dahan, also of Bayit Yehudi.

The Council of the Chief Rabbinate decided on Monday to summon Riskin for a hearing before deciding whether or not to grant a five year extension to his tenure as municipal chief rabbi of Efrat as is now required since the rabbi has reached the age of retirement of 75 later this year.

Such a summons is very unusual and according to sources in the chief rabbinate is politically motivated step by some of Riskin’s opponents.
