Ministers move Begin’s ‘Jewish State bill’ to another ministerial committee

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a pared-down version of the “Jewish State bill” proposed by MK Bennie Begin (Likud), moving it to a new ministerial committee on Jewish State bills.

The committee is meant to bridge the gaps between members of the coalition who seek to pass a constitutional provision meaning to define Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people but have very different ideas of what the details of such a bill should be.

Begin’s bill, based on proposals from Yesh Atid and Hatnua in the last Knesset, simply states that “Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people, based on the foundations of liberty, justice, and peace in light of the vision of the prophets of Israel and upholds equal rights for all its citizens.”
