Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu currently is the acting Foreign Minister, but in a surprise move, the Israeli Embassy in Canada is to host radical leftist Israeli singer Achinoam Nini (Noa) to perform on Israeli Independence Day – despite her longstanding attacks on Netanyahu.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver (JFGV) announced Tuesday that the Israeli Embassy and the Israeli Consulate General in Toronto and Western Canada decided to hold the Independence Day celebration in Vancouver, and that Nini would perform, reports CIJ News Wednesday.
“We were thrilled when both the Embassy and the Consulate approached us with offers to be official sponsors of our Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration,” said Stephen Gaerber, Chair of the Board of JFGV.
“As official representatives of the State of Israel, we see support from the Embassy and the Consulate as strong messages that there is room for diversity both within Israel and within our community. We are also very happy that the Deputy Consul General is once again planning to represent the State of Israel at our Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration.”
The celebration is to take place on May 11 at the Chan Center.
Nini's selection is surprising given that she has long strongly condemned Netanyahu, even as she said of Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas the following: "I admire President Abbas and his adamant adherence to ways of peace."
CIJ News notes that back in September 14, 2011, Nini said, "we are led by a group of racist macho-type thugs, who are incredibly stupid."
Just last year on February 9, she said, "the LAST MAN ON EARTH who speaks for me is this man (Binyamin Netanyahu – ed.). He is dangerous."
Before elections last March, she wrote, "God. Dear God…I beg you to send wisdom and com[p]assion to the hearts of our citizens, that they vote to RID our country of the destructive, arrogant, racist government of Benjamin Netanyahu and his cohorts…they destroy everything that was ever good in my country… Anything, God, but please don’t let them gain power again! our country is in such grave danger, my children’s lives are in danger, our souls are in danger, the fundamental principles of Judaism we treasure are being prostituted, fear and hatred is being dripped like venom into the veins of our society, we are becoming monsters! Please rid us of these evil men and women, who for the sake of power and fanatic mania are willing to bleed us all to death. It is they, not Iran, who pose the greatest threat to our future!”
Later in March she wrote that "Netanyahu is known to be an artist of deception."
And last month on January 25, she said, "I am here today to raise the voice of millions of Israelis and Palestinians who are sick and tired of being victims of the powerful, the manipulative, the heartless and the greedy, who have forsaken all human values and sold their souls to darkness."
