Netanyahu orders not to return terrorists’ bodies

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday ordered Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) not to return the bodies of Arab terrorists who murdered Jews.

While the Security Cabinet previously decided not to return the bodies of terrorists as a deterrent step, Ya'alon has continued returning the bodies of Arab terrorists from Judea and Samaria, which is under his jurisdiction. For his part, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) has largely blocked the return of bodies of terrorists from sovereign Israel.

The government has been condemned for returning bodies, and the subsequent funerals have often become massive terror parades inciting new attacks, such as in one particularly harrowing funeral in Jerusalem in January in which hundreds of Hamas terrorists fired automatic weapons in the air.

Netanyahu's new step not to return the bodies indicates an increase in the measures taken against the terror wave that has raged since last September, and which has claimed the lives of 34 victims.

As noted Erdan has ordered not to return the bodies of terrorists, unless their families promise not to hold public funerals praising them and their murderous acts.

The Defense Ministry has generally claimed that returning the bodies of terrorists prevents larger "revenge" attacks. The Internal Security Ministry on the other hand abides by the reasoning that large funerals only increase the incitement and lead to more attacks.

It would seem Netanyahu is moving towards the Internal Security Ministry's position in his new order.
