The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee has sent up bill to ban publishing the names of IDF soldiers who are under investigation. It will now go to the Knesset Assembly for its first reading.
Currently, news agencies are permitted to name a soldier unless there is an injunction against doing so. This move would reverse the situation, barring the publication unless there is an order to allow it.
MK and former IDF Major General Eyal Ben-Reuven (Zionist Union) sponsored the bill. "I support a thorough investigation of operational events, but we also need to protect our troops when they are being investigated," he said.
The proposal comes in response to the ongoing tumult over a soldier who shot a neutralized terrorist in Hevron.
