Nigeria: At least 65 dead in Islamist attack

At least 65 people were killed Saturday evening in a bombing by the Islamist organization Boko Haram, in northeast Nigeria.

The attack took place on the outskirts of the northeastern city of Maiduguri, according to a Reuters reporter, who counted the bodies at a hospital morgue.

A Nigerian military spokesman, Colonel Mustapha Ankas, said that Boko Haram attacked the community of Dalori, about five kilometers east of Maiduguri.

The Islamist group has waged a six-year-long terror campaign that has killed 20,000 people and driven 2.3 million people from their homes. It has also carried out deadly cross-border raids in the neighboring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), up to one million children have been forced out of school as a result of the instability in Nigeria.

A report by the Global Terrorism Index revealed that Boko Haram is the deadliest Islamist terror group in operation. Boko Haram murdered 6,644 victims in 2014, compared to 6,073 people who were murdered by Islamic State (ISIS).
