Obama official defends abstention

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration “could not in good conscience” vote against a resolution brought before the UN Security Council condemning Israel for its settlement enterprise, a senior White House official said on Friday afternoon, explaining US President Barack Obama’s decision to abstain from the vote and let the resolution pass.

Obama’s decision, which has infuriated the Israeli government and its allies in Washington, is “consistent with bipartisan US policy” opposed to Israeli actions that are “eroding” the prospects for real peace with the Palestinians, Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, said in a phone call.
