PM seeks bill to postpone Amona outpost destruction

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Likud lawmakers to come up with legislation that could delay the demolition of the Amona outpost, and MK Miki Zohar stepped up to the plate Wednesday.

Amona, a small community near Ofra, is slated for demolition at the end of the year, and the 40 families residing there rejected a plan to move them to a new, legal site near Shiloh.

The outpost was built in 1995, with a grant from the Construction and Housing MInistry. Ten Palestinians from the nearby village of Silwad claimed ownership of the land in a petition to the High Court brought on their behalf by the NGO Yesh Din, and the High Court determined in 2014 that Amona cannot be legalized retroactively.
