Police Chief: MKs on Temple Mount endanger Israel

Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich has claimed to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in a warning letter that MKs who go up to the Temple Mount endanger national security, Channel 2 reports.

In a letter sent to the Prime Minister, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, Alsheich explained his decision to ban MKs from visiting the site in the near future.

According Alsheich, the arrival of both Jewish and Arab Knesset members to the Temple Mount could inflame tensions during the Passover holiday season.

“In light of the many attempts by extremists on both sides to provoke ahead of the holidays, I believe that at this time, the ascension of MKs to the Temple Mount could lead to an escalation of tension and escalation of events in a way that constitutes a real danger to state security," wrote Alsheich.

The Commissioner further noted that the ban will continue until further notice, but promised that "the issue will be reconsidered immediately after the holidays."

It should be reminded that last October, Netanyahu instructed Jerusalem police not to allow all ministers and MKs, either Jewish or Arab, to visit the Temple Mount.

However, extremist Arab MK Basel Ghattas (Joint List) visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount later that month claiming that Netanyahu and Israel are not able to stop him from entering the mosque.

There has been no change to the instruction since then.
