The leader of Lehava, an extremist anti-assimilation group that espouses hate speech against Arabs, gays and Christians, was detained by police on Tuesday for stating that he condones the arson attack at the Church of the Loaves and Fishes in the Galilee.
According to police, Bentzi Gopstein, who heads the organization, was summoned by West Bank investigators for the incendiary comments made last week during a panel discussion with yeshiva students in Jerusalem.
When asked at the meeting if he condoned the June 18 burning of the church, which was targeted by Jewish extremists, Gopstein reportedly replied: “Did the Rambam rule to destroy idol worship or not? Idol worship must be destroyed. It’s simply yes – what’s the question?”
