Report: ISIS behind Istanbul attack

Police believe that the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group was behind suicide bomb attacks at Istanbul's international airport that killed 28 people on Tuesday evening, Reuters reports, citing the Turkish Dogan News Agency.

Dogan cited police sources as saying: "ISIS is behind the attack" at the Ataturk Airport.

A Turkish official, however, said it was too early to confirm any links when asked about that specific report. As well, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

At least 60 people were wounded in Tuesday evening’s attack, which Turkish officials said took place as two suicide bombers detonated their explosives.

The attack took place in the international departures area, according to CNN.

Gunfire also heard at the site was from Turkish security forces attempting to stop the bombers, officials added.

Turkey has in recent months been targeted with deadly attacks by terrorists from the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group – including suicide bombings – as well as smaller-scale attacks by left-wing extremists.

The country has also been rocked by an ongoing insurgency with Kurdish separatists.
