Report: Jerusalem mayor to force supermarkets to close on Sabbath

In an apparent quid pro quo to appease haredi leadership and constituents who are appalled that a new multiplex in the capital is operating during Shabbat, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat is reportedly closing the operations of eight downtown minimarkets through the Sabbath.

The move comes less than one week after the 16-screen Yes Planet debuted in southern Jerusalem amid widespread protest from haredi councilmen and tens of thousands of their constituents, some of whom rioted.

According to Army Radio, Barkat made the agreement to close the minimarkets on Agrippas, Keren Hayesod, and Shivtei Yisrael streets to placate religious members of his coalition who deemed the cinema blasphemous.
