A senior Hamas delegation led by the group’s leader, Khaled Mashal, arrived in Saudi Arabia early Thursday morning. The visit to the kingdom is the first in three years for Mashal, and seems to highlight the Saudi interest in reproach with the group, occurring merely
two days after the signing of an Iran deal. A deal which would see the release of vast Iranian funds, which could be used to finance groups like Hamas. The Saudis are apparently angling to replace Iran as Hamas’s chief financier. The issue has caused a rift between the organizations military and political wings, with leaders of the military wing favoring Iranian funding for military infrastructure, and members of the political wing favoring the Saudi – Egyptian route.
