Shaked introduces major changes to confessions law to protect defendants

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked on Tuesday announced a major proposed change to the law dealing with confessions to better protect defendants when they might make confessions under pressure.

Many security cases involving Arab-Israelis (and potentially Palestinians if the IDF’s West Bank Courts adopt the change) and even some involving Jewish security suspects could be heavily impacted by the change.

The changes are based on the recommendations of a committee led by former Supreme Court justice Edna Arbel, and Shaked introduced them with the slogan, “evidence which is taken against the law will not be part of the legal proceedings.”
