The President of Shas's Council of Torah Sages, Rabbi Shlomo Cohen, has offered his encouragement to party head Aryeh Deri, as reports come out of a new police investigation into Deri's activities.
"G-d protects those who do good for the public," Rabbi Cohen told Deri, adding that "you have no better protector than the Holy One. Keep up your holy work for the Jewish People."
Earlier on Wednesday, Interior Minister Deri spoke at a Jerusalem conference for security officers. He addressed the new case, whose details are still under a gag order. "I asked to speed up the investigation process. I My request is to hurry and to go as quickly as possible in order to remove any doubts.
He explained, "I, and all those connected to me, are ready to answer, to help, and to let them do their work – I only want to press on the gas a little so we can do it faster. I am continuing to do my job for now."
Deri says that the confirmation that he is under suspicion "took me completely by surprise."
The Shas leader served two years in prison from 2000 until 2002 for accepting $155,000 in bribes during his previous term as Interior Minister.
