Tax evasion, extortion by ‘mystic’ rabbis and kashrut authorities examined by Knesset committee

“Mystic” rabbis whose remuneration for spiritual advice is untaxed, allegations of coercion by local rabbinates and extremely profitable independent kashrut supervision authorities which pay no tax all came under the microscope at a hearing of the Knesset State Comptroller’s Committee on Monday.

The hearing not only exposed these concerning practices but also bore fruit, with the director of the Israel Tax Authority saying that the authority would shortly issue new regulations for taxing rabbis that proffer advice in return for payment, as well as the independent kashrut authorities, many of which are registered as non-profit organizations and receive tax breaks.
