Tel Aviv invites Caitlyn Jenner to be Gay Pride guest of honor

The Tel Aviv Municipality has jumped on the Caitlyn Jenner bandwagon, inviting the former Olympic men’s decathlon champion to join its Gay Pride Week festivities, Yedioth Aharonoth reported on Thursday.

Jenner, born Bruce Jenner, publicly revealed his plans to transition to a woman in an interview with 20/20’s Diane Sawyer in April. Vanity Fair announced this week it is running Jenner’s first public interview since completing her gender transition in its issue that hits the stands on June 9.

“When I saw your interview with Diane Sawyer, I was amazed by your bravery and determination to live your life as you choose,” Yaniv Weizman, who holds the gay community portfolio on the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipal council, wrote Jenner in the invitation. “The fact that you provided us an opportunity to smile and revealed the personal and complex process you went through, the difficulties that stood in your way, made you a source of inspiration for us in Tel Aviv.” Weizman added that the news of Jenner’s transition led to calls to invite her to participate in the city’s Gay Pride Week events as a guest of honor.

The week, which commences Sunday, culminates on June 12 with the Gay Pride parade, which annually draws thousands of participants, many of them tourists. This year the city is putting a special emphasis on the transgender community.

The city has yet to receive a response from Jenner, according to the newspaper.
