The Turkel Committee for approving top government appointments on Tuesday held its first proceedings regarding the nomination of IDF Brig. Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch for the country’s top police post.
Hirsch, as well as Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, who nominated Hirsch and former police chief Yohanan Danino all testified before the committee, named for its chair former Supreme Court justice Jacob Turkel.
The presumption was that Hirsch and Erdan supported the nomination, while Danino argued against it and in favor of his successor being selected from within the ranks of the police – a presumption which neither sources close to the committee or the Prime Minister’s Office denied (though neither confirmed either).
