The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recognized on Sunday the necropolis of the ancient archeological site of Beit She’arim in the Lower Galilee as a World Heritage Site.

The rock-cut catacombs became the ninth site listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in Israel.

The hilltop site, labeled by UNESCO as "a landmark of Jewish renewal," was original proposed as a World Heritage Site in 2002.
