United Torah Judaism Supports Unity Government

United Torah Judaism, like fellow haredi party Shas, is in favor of a unity government, UTJ MK Moshe Gafni stated Tuesday.

"The coalition will expand, in my opinion, with the Zionist Union," Gafni told Army Radio, referring to Labor. "There is no doubt about that."

Gafni insisted that the conflicts raised by small parties were torpedoing the possibility of a government that was exclusively right-wing, and that he'd be "very happy" if Labor were part of the coalition.

Shas chairman Aryeh Deri also called on Labor to join the government earlier Tuesday, as he has in days past, to work on social issues with the leftist party.

The fate of the coalition rests in Jewish Home's hands on Tuesday, after Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman announced that his party would refuse to join the government, leaving the coalition to a mere 61 MKs.

If Jewish Home signs a coalition deal, the government will consist of 61 MKs; analysts predict a highly unstable government. If Jewish Home refuses, it is likely to serve in the Opposition of a left-wing government headed by Labor leader Yitzhak Herzog.

The current coalition deadline is Wednesday.
