US Secretary of State Kerry arrives in Ukraine for talks with embattled leaders

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Kiev on Thursday for talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and government leaders amid a worsening situation in eastern Ukraine where government forces are fighting encroaching pro-Russian separatists. A senior State Department official said Kerry, whose plane touched down in driving snow, would offer US support for efforts by Ukraine to negotiate a new ceasefire. “He will be endeavouring to support efforts by Ukrainians to get back to serious negotiations … and will be offering any US support to any diplomatic framework that can be successful in this context,” a senior State Department official told reporters en route to Kiev.
