Violent riots erupt at San Jose Trump rally

Approximately 1,000 demonstrators clashed with supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump outside a San Jose rally Thursday, at about 7:30 p.m. local time.

Twitter photos showed Trump supporters bloodied by rocks or reeling from egg-throwing attacks.

Earlier in the afternoon, hundreds of locals – mostly young Latinos and union members – staged a peaceful protest outside the convention center, holding placards and shouting jeers at Trump and his supporters.

But the protesting eventually devolved into not only the attacks, but also street-fighting. At one point, the protesters were seen burning an American flag.

The Guardian attributes the change in mood to one woman in Trump attire who screamed taunts at the crowd before retreating into a nearby Marriott hotel. Then, as Trump supporters began leaving the venue, groups of young men began attempting to hit them on their way home.

Police in riot gear flooded the scene, eventually outnumbering the protestors. Some of the demonstrators attempted to hit back; others attempted to build a barrier.

Locals at the scene report the protests have died down somewhat as the night dwindles.

San Jose mayor Sam Liccardo told the Associated Press late Thursday that he holds Trump responsible for the unrest.
