Volunteer medic delivers his own baby

Magen David Adom (MDA) volunteer medic Eran Moshe is a proud father of five children born in the hospital following regular delivery routines. Yet the story of the birth of his sixth child was different and unique.

In the late hours of the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, his wife Bat-El woke him up saying that the baby was coming, even though it was a few days ahead of her due date.

Eran, who is well-practiced with the birth procedure, began to prepare for the trip to the hospital, but shortly afterwards they realized that there would not be enough time to reach the hospital on time as Bat-El was already in labor.

Eran phoned his MDA colleagues and requested an ambulance be sent to their Sderot home to deliver the fast-coming baby.

Once the medical team entered the couple’s bedroom, they were shocked to discover that the impatient infant had already been delivered by the hands of her father.

All that remained was to cut the umbilical cord and deliver both mother and baby girl safely to the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon.

The happy father explained: "We had no precursor labor signs, and I even planned to accompany one of my other children as a chaperon on a field trip which I had to cancel last minute. I started to prepare the necessary equipment for the trip to the hospital but at some point we realized that we could do it ourselves."

“I stepped up to the role of midwife and the MDA team that arrived so quickly to our home were shocked too. I'm happy and excited that I was there and I was able to bring my sixth child into the world unhurt, and would like to thank the MDA members that arrived at the scene and were helpful, professional, and efficient.”
