Watch: Moving Concert in Memory of the ‘King of Cantors’

An inspirational concert took place this week on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem in memory of Yosef "Yossele" Rosenblatt (1882-1933), who is regarded as the "King of Cantors."

The concert, which features classical works of Ashkenazi chazanut - cantorial music – was led by cantors Yitzchak Meir Helfgot and Dov Heller. They were backed by 90 cantors and 90 musicians.

The cantors came from the Jerusalem Chazanim Choir, Zameret Yah Choir and Binyamin Choir, while the musicians were of the Jerusalem Symphonic Orchestra.

On Sunday the solemn "three week" period marking the fall of Jerusalem to the destruction of the Holy Temple begins. During that period concerts are not held according to Jewish custom, making the timing of the concert this week significant.

The concert was produced by the Council of Jewish Cemeteries in Jerusalem and supported by several governmental ministries, including the Religious Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Education.
