‘We Could Have Prevented the Disengagement’

The Disengagement from Gush Katif (Gaza) in 2005 could have been avoided, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein opined Sunday.

"We are commemorating now ten years since the cursed disengagement, in which we handed over parts of the Land of Israel to our enemies," Edelstein stated, during a Chabad-Lubavitch event in Tel Aviv.

"The Disengagement directly caused tens of thousands of rockets to be fired at Sderot, Ashdod and Tel Aviv, and we are at any given moment in danger because of this bad decision," he continued.

"We had to fight more vigorously against it," Edelstein opined. "If 50,000 Jews would have laid down on the roads, the Disengagement never would have been carried out."

Edelstein has been highly vocal about his disapproval for the Disengagement, and in the months preceding the mass eviction, he lived in the Gush Katif community of Gadid before it was destroyed.

The Knesset Speaker also publicly rallied behind a bill in November 2014 to reverse the expulsion of several communities in Samaria during the same period.
