The IDF will continue to defend Israel from all threats, including Syria, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Monday night after the IDF responded Sunday night to a missile that was fired at the Golan from Syrian territory.
In a statement, the IDF attributed the rocket fire to an errant mortar shell fired by Syrian rebel groups in the country's ongoing civil war. This is the second time in the past two days errant fire from the Syrian Armed Forces landed in Israeli territory, the IDF said.
In response, the IDF on Sunday evening used artillery fire against two targets on the Syrian side of the Golan border.
“The IDF views the Syrian army as responsible for the goings on in its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel's sovereignty and the security of its citizens,” the IDF statement said.
In his own statement Monday, Yaalon said that the rocket fire was a “red line” that Israel would not tolerate. “Israel does not intend to ignore these incidents. We see the Syrian government as responsible for what happens in Syrian territory.”
